Genetics is the study of heredity, where the basic unit of inheritance is the gene. Genetics is considered one of the central cornerstones of biology, and its influence can be seen in other areas such as biotechnology, medicine, and agriculture. 

Genetic information is found in cell structures called chromosomes. Chromosomes are made up on DNA and other associated proteins, although certain viruses’ hereditary material is made up of RNA as opposed to DNA. Genes consist of specific segments of DNA or RNA molecules, and they form the basic blueprint of an organism, regulating its anatomical and physiological features.
